6 Health Tips Everyone in Their 20s Should Follow

Source: Stocksy

I’d like to make a case that your 20s are the weirdest decade of your life. All of a sudden, you’re all on your own (I miss you, mom!), trying to get a job or score a promotion, spending any off-time on your social life (FOMO is real), and maybe (just maybe) being in a relationship or saving up for those major purchases like a house, a kid, or a dog (vet bills are no joke). Who has the time and money to prioritize all the different health tips out there too? Plus, we’re told that we’re “so young” and have “nothing to worry about” (even when it definitely doesn’t feel that way).

While your 20s should absolutely be enjoyed (just like every other decade of your life, FYI), it’s also a crucial time to revaluate your health and establish habits that will help keep you healthy as you get older. Think of it like an investment: What you do for your body now will not only make you feel your best, but will also help your future self be healthier too. Read on for six things women in their 20s should be doing for their health.

1. Prioritize your reproductive health

Source: Modern Fertility

Your 20s are weird because everyone is in a different place: You may have some friends who already have two kids while other friends just booked a one-way ticket to Thailand after quitting their job on a split decision. But one thing we all have in common, no matter what’s in our five-year plan, is that knowledge is power. Whether having kids is a part of your future or not, knowing your body is crucial for health. The Modern Fertility Hormone Test is the most comprehensive hormone test you can take at home for a fraction of the cost, and it comes with personalized reports, 1:1 consultation with a fertility nurse, and a community of people to lean on for support. Modern Fertility believes that knowing your fertility early on is the key to owning your future.

Real talk: whether you are considering having kids or not, Modern Fertility can get you the information you need to be proactive about your reproductive health. The test will give you insight into your ovarian reserve (how many eggs you have), potential success rates for IVF and egg-freezing, and can help identify red flags that may indicate a hormone imbalance (1 in 10 women suffer from PCOS.)

Think of Modern Fertility like every 20-something’s best friend: it will help you plan for the future you want, and be there to support you every step of the way. The test is also HSA/FSA eligible and shipping is always free. Get 10% off your order HERE.

2. Schedule regular doctor appointments

Source: Ksenia Chernaya | Pexels

Whether you’re an older Gen Z or a younger millennial, you might not be in the habit of scheduling regular doctor visits. Maybe your mom always scheduled those appointments for you until you turned 18 so it’s just not a habit, or maybe you let busy work life and an overbooked calendar delay those appointments because there’s no pressing issues right now. PSA: Health is not something you focus on when you’re forced to. Preventive health ensures your body is as healthy as possible, and regular visits are important to stay on top of symptoms or underlying issues you don’t even know are there (yes, even as young as your 20s).

You need a physical exam once a year, but you should also see a gynecologist every year if you have a vagina, a dermatologist every few months (depending on your family history, concerns, etc.), a dentist every six months, and any other specialists as needed. Get in the habit of scheduling all appointments needed for the next 12 months at once. Dedicate some time this week to make all the appointments you’ll need over the next year, and set up a system to make sure to keep regular appointments in the future (like booking the next appointment at the doctor’s office or scheduling the same chunk of time in a year from now to make those appointments).

3. Take your mental health seriously

Source: The Everygirl

The good news is that our generation prioritizes mental health more than any generation before, thanks to normalizing therapy (thank you, #therapytiktok!) and moving away from burnout culture. But just because it’s “common” to feel anxious and burned out does not mean you should feel anxious or burned out. You have routines for your physical health (read: eating your veggies, working out, and annual doctor visits), and you should have an established routine for your mental health too. Whether that means weekly therapy sessions, daily meditation, regular tech-free time, or leaving a job that’s depleting you, prioritize mental health above all else. Oh, and don’t wait until you’re totally burned out or suffering with anxiety or depression to ask for help and make some changes. Work with a therapist and instill daily practices to avoid getting to that point in the first place.

4. Eat for your health

Source: Ekaterina Bolovtsova | Pexels

Maybe it was when you graduated college and realized cafeteria food and binge-drinking wine out of bags just wouldn’t cut it anymore, or maybe as you got older, you noticed your body doesn’t bounce back from a McDonald’s meal or pitcher of spicy margaritas like it used to. No matter what the catalyst is, many people start to reevaluate the way that they’re eating when they’re in their 20s. However, just because your body is changing and reacting to food differently does not mean you should be eating for weight loss. Instead, think of every bite you take as an investment in your future self.

What you’re eating now will impact your health in 10, 20, or 30 years. Instead of just eating “healthy” so that your body can look a certain way, start eating to boost heart health (like leafy greens and avocados), keep your energy levels increased (like bananas or dark chocolate), or improve overall longevity (like cruciferous vegetables and berries). In other words, eat your fruits and veggies because they’ll help you feel good, not just because they help you look good. It’s certainly never too soon to start eating for your future self, so get in the habit now of using food as a tool to stay your healthiest as you get older.

5. Wear SPF every time you go outside

Source: @neutrogena

If SPF is something you only pull out before a beach day, we need to talk. Sun protection is a crucial part of overall health, but it’s one of the most overlooked. Sun damage (including skin cancer) can happen anytime you’re exposed to the sun, not just if you get a bad burn after a day outside. If you’re not yet in the habit of applying SPF every time you leave the house, keep a face sunscreen by the front door with your keys and wallet so you remember to put on a quick layer before running out the door or keep a bottle in your car for easy reapplication. Of course, sun protection is most important for protecting against serious sun damage like skin cancer, but it’s also a crucial time to prevent other forms of sun damage like wrinkles or hyperpigmentation that increase as we age. Trust me, you’d much rather take preventative measures now to protect your gorgeous skin than fight the effects years from now.

6. Get a good night’s sleep (every night)

Source: Alaina Kaczmarski

Long gone are the days of regular clubbing until 6 a.m. or pulling an all-nighter for an exam. Sure, we might have a fun night out here and there, a special event, or an extra heavy workday that will give us a shorter night of sleep, but I stopped being able to enjoy any time spent out past 11 p.m. the day I turned 25. The reality is that sleep cannot be a second thought or a welcomed bonus like it might have been in your teenage and college years. Start prioritizing sleep (and quality sleep) every night. Turn off Netflix at a reasonable time and have a go-to wind down routine that you prioritize over the next episode of Outer Banks (as hard as it is to turn it off!). Especially as we get older, sleep is crucial for keeping the body as healthy as possible and our energy levels high, so prioritize getting a full seven to nine hours of sleep every night.

What Tinder Taught Me About Dating

Source: Pexels

OK, everyone is abuzz about it, and I know I’m late to the party. But the other day, I said to my productivity, “Hey, workflow, let’s take an unexpected two-hour break and check this out.” “This” being Tinder: a dating app that’s like if hotornot.com (remember that?!) had a lovechild with match.com.

Sponsored by Equilibria /

Looking for Better Sleep? This Super Ingredient Might Be the Answer

don’t fret, exhausted readers 💤

Basically, Tinder is a location-based app that pulls info from your Facebook to create your profile, and then pulls up matches that meet your age/gender identity/location criteria. All you see of these potential matches are a few photos, any mutual friends or interests (according to your FB profile), and one tagline. Then, you “swipe right” if you’re interested in them, and left if you aren’t (bonus: when you swipe left, you get a satisfying stamp across their picture that says “NOPE.”) From there, if you also fall into their criteria (age, gender, distance) and they find you attractive. you match. Then, you can chat, swap numbers, meet up for a date, etc.

Naturally, I had a lot of questions: what are people doing on here? Is anyone normal? Is it just a hookup app? Has anyone actually ended up with someone this way? Is it too superficial? Dangerous? WILL I BE THE FIRST TINDER MARRIAGE?

The danger aspect really got me. The fact that you can tell when someone is “less than a mile away” made me believe that I was one mis-swipe away from ending up in some guy named Xenon’s trunk never to be seen again all because he had a cheeky tagline and a photo of a puppy in his profile pic.

What started out as an experiment got me thinking about what this app says about dating in general. Is Tinder simply a microcosm of what we do in real life ( that’s what its creators profess)? File people away as attractive or unattractive, make split-second decisions based on minimal facts, trust complete strangers? Do we really need to know tons of information about someone to know if they’re a good match?

Thus, I drafted a list of dating app truths… many of which are true about dating in general:

  • If you didn’t know you had a type: you do, hence the quick-fire way you can absolutely hate or love someone’s face.
  • There is no smooth way to start a conversation with a total stranger with whom the only thing you have in common is the belief that you both are not ugly.
  • It’s OK to dislike someone based solely on the Facebook friend that you have in common.
  • People have apparently not learned that it might be misleading or confusing to highlight pictures of them with their nieces or nephews.
  • A clever opener goes a LONG way.
  • You never get a second chance at a first impression.
  • Apparently, 80 percent of men like to “work hard, play hard,” have many leather-bound books and apartments that smell of rich mahogany, and know approximately one phrase in Latin.
  • If they seem too good to be true, they probably are.
  • Take this as an opportunity to delete profile pictures that you didn’t know you had of you and your ex. Nothing more confusing than a Tinder pic of a guy snuggled up to a girl. The same goes for “interests” you may not know you have selected on Facebook. I just saw a guy with whom the only thing we had in common was our shared interest in Buitoni Pasta. What?!
  • If someone is less than a mile away, put your phone down slowly—very slowly—and run for your life (OK, this one is just me).
  • Everyone loves traveling! And working out! And trying new things! And food!

A Gen Z-er’s Honest Thoughts About the Word “Cheugy”

Source: Pexels

On my first day of college, I was hit with a playful insult that changed my life forever. When I walked up to my freshman dorm wearing a pair of Birkenstocks and carrying a Hydro Flask, I was labeled a “VSCO girl.” This spurred an immediate existential crisis: Was I basic? Was there something wrong with the way I was dressing? Would I be ousted from collegiate social life because I drank my coffee from metal straws?

Sponsored by Equilibria /

Looking for Better Sleep? This Super Ingredient Might Be the Answer

don’t fret, exhausted readers 💤

This spiral of thoughts, although in my case under the category of “VSCO girl,” is something most women are probably familiar with. It’s a common reaction to being lumped into a category based on the things you like to have, use, and wear. Recently, a term that incites even more of a freak-out than I had that fateful August afternoon has gone viral: cheugy.

What does Cheugy mean, anyway?

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the word “cheugy” has been used on a massive scale this summer to describe anything mildly outdated or out of style. This applies to Ugg boots, graphic tees with cheesy sayings on them, and—dare I say it—skinny jeans. It refers to things that were once beloved in the 2010s but now are utterly despised by the trendy. Invented by a Zoomer, the term naturally creates a division between Gen Z and millennials.

Why does Cheugy even exist?

However, what has gone undiscussed about the word cheugy is the reason why young adults and teens on TikTok feel so comfortable throwing it around. The term has circulated among Gen Zers not just because it somehow describes the indescribably outdated, but also because those who regularly use it are used to watching things go out of style in a matter of months.

People born between the years 1997 and 2010 have never known a world without fast fashion—big-name internet retailers that add thousands of new items to their inventory every week have always been around for us. People my age are used to watching items become outdated before they even arrive on our doorsteps. Remember when Adidas superstars and the color maroon were all anyone could talk about for a few months in 2016, and then suddenly those trends were completely obsolete? That cycle was never new to Gen Z. My generation does not even have the ability to define what is “cool” by season anymore—instead, the newer the better, all the time.

The word “cheugy” means that language now exists for young people to describe what it is like to experience such a fast trend cycle. The adjective itself is not an insult to anything that we might view as outdated but rather something that encapsulates how we experience the world.

Why I’m completely over it

As someone who has been called (and hurt by) internet labels before, I get why some people over the age of 22 are frustrated with “cheugy.” When the word stops being a way to describe things (such as exposed light bulbs and frosé) and starts being slapped on people, it is no longer a generation’s self-aware way of describing the trend cycle and is instead just a bit mean.

When using a word like “cheugy”—or “basic” or “VSCO girl” or anything else that lumps things that people like into a single category—the most important thing to remember is why that word exists in the first place. Gen Z awkwardly misses the point when they decide to label an entire person as cheugy. On the flip side, millennials demonstrate a shortsided unwillingness to understand the fast-fashion-oriented brains of Gen Zers when they write the word off as cruel.

Final thoughts

As an older Gen Zer, there are so many cheugy things that I love and will cling to forever—and yes, I do look great in these skinny jeans. So in my opinion, use the word cheugy. Heck, embrace the cheuginess of the things you love to the fullest extent! Showing that you can resist the incredibly short attention span of the fashion industry these days and have a style that is completely yours is deeply cool, no matter how old you are.

Dylan O’Brien as a Blond with Tattoos Is Sending the Internet Into a Thirsty Tailspin

Dylan O'Brien arrives to the Los Angeles premiere of Paramount Pictures' Bumblebee held at TCL Chinese Theatre on...Getty Images

Where are all the Teen Wolf fans at? Are y'all OK? I ask because Dylan O'Brien is fully a platinum blond now, and nobody seems to be handling it very well (myself included). That's right: the actor who's always been known for that dark, often disheveled hair and what was infamously known to Tumblr as his "glass of whiskey eyes" looks very different now, as a recent TikTok video reveals.

On August  17, the official account for the upcoming comedy movie Not Okay (in which O'Brien will star) posted a video of the actor before and after his transition into the character Colin. With clean-cut blond hair, a freshly trimmed beard, a chunky silver chain, and a slew of fake tattoos, Colin looks absolutely nothing like O'Brien in real life… which, according to the fans in the comments, is juuuuuust fine.

Legitimately, this sheer thrist power of this video has people wondering whether or not to call an ambulance. "IS EVERYONE STILL BREATHING??? I'M NOT," one user comments, while another writes, "This movie is called 'not okay' because after this I'M DEFINITELY NOT OKAY." I personally think this situation is best put by whoever wrote this sentiment: "I will never recover from this."

Unsurprisingly, O'Brien's tranformation video has earned more than 7 million views in less than 24 hours — that's probably because I, along with everyone else, am just sitting here watching it over. And over. And over. And over again. I mean…. could anyone really blame me?

Sha’Carri Richardson Traded in Her Signature Fiery Hair Color for Blonde and Peekaboo Blue

Sha'Carri Richardson with orange hair blowing in the windGetty Images

We're still not over the way Sha'Carri Richardson sprinted into our hearts and onto our hair-goals list a couple of months ago. (We're also still not over the utter B.S. that kept her out of the Olympics after triumphantly qualifying, but I digress.) The gifted runner became instantly recognizable for the stunning orange wig she wore to race, and while she's been seen in darker, redder variations of the shade since, it seemed warm, fiery hair was Richardson's go-to hue — until now.

Richardson posted a video to Instagram revealing an unexpected new look. The clip starts out with the star athlete sitting in a salon chair, showing off her natural hair. As she lip syncs to Nicki Minaj's voice — "I took a couple, you know, I took some time off to rest, and now it's game time, bitches" — her stylist yanks her smock off, cutting to her "after."

Richardson now has super long, platinum blonde, middle-parted, wavy hair — a huge departure from her usual color. But what makes it an even bigger change is the incredible section of blue underneath. The look was created by Orlando-based stylist Brianna Renee, also known as The Lace Tamer.

Peekaboo color like Richardson's new blue is a huge trend for fall, according to New York City-based stylist Luis Miller. "Peekaboo colors I’m seeing a lot of — some in half the bang, and then under the side, around the face," he tells Allure.

Missouri colorist Colissa Nole has observed the same thing — and not just on blonde hair like Richardson's new base color. "High-contrast and pops of bright next to a dark base is super in as well," she says.

We're obsessed with how the blue matches her Nike singlet and briefs. (If you look closely, it appears to match the accent nail on her fabulous manicure, too.) And we honestly can't wait to see this beautiful hair flowing behind her when she gets back on the track.

The Best Powder and Foam Shampoos

9 Best Powder and Foam Shampoos in 2021 Shop Now

Courtesy of brand

Shampoo is a beauty essential that's seemingly as old as time. But as technology, personal preference, and ingredient innovations evolve, so have the formulas. Long gone are the days of regularly using sulfate-laced, oil-stripping, one-size-fits-all hair cleansers that only work on a handful of hair textures. Not only are newer formats — like shampoo bars, powder, and foam shampoos — becoming vaster, but you can pretty much customize your washday experience to meet the changing needs of your hair. What's more, many of the newer options available also eliminate bulky bottles and excess water waste.

The average bottle of shampoo is 80 percent water — but more brands are cutting back on H20, or doing away with it altogether. Eliminating or minimizing water "reduces the weight of a product, which reduces CO2 emissions in transport," says Anna Cummins, cofounder of 5 Gyres, a nonprofit focused on curbing plastic pollution. "It also reduces the need for plastic packaging, [since] a dry product can be packaged in paper or materials that don't need to be water-repellent. And it concentrates the product, so a smaller amount goes a longer way."

Powder and foam shampoos can help us be more environmentally conscious in our beauty routine, and in some cases, allow for hair refreshing beyond your shower. Sure the concept of dry shampoo isn't new, but waterless or low-water options can provide the same level of deep clean as a liquid formula — without having to rewet your entire head. We gathered up some of our favorite new shampoo formulas that'll make your hair-cleansing experience feel like you just left the salon.

Lorde Wears Wellness-Influencer Blonde Hair in Her “Mood Ring” Music Video

lorde with blonde hair from mood ring music videoCourtesy of UMG

Back in June, when Lorde surprise-released her comeback single and video "Solar Power" —featuring a sunflower yellow Collina Strada two-piece, a Midsommar-esque cult of sun-kissed followers, and a fennel bong — we couldn't help but feel there was something gently tongue-in-cheek about the whole affair. Was the singer gently (if affectionately) trolling the world of wellness influencers with her talk of "leading the boys and girls onto the beaches?" Or when she described herself as "kinda like a prettier Jesus?"

Either way, there's certainly one element of Lorde's "Mood Ring" video, her new single released earlier today, that is no joke: her brand-new blonde hair. Yes, you read that right. The musician, once pop's most eminent goth princess, switched out her famously lengthy dark brown tresses for the video, opting instead for an icy, near-white shade that wouldn't look out of place on a Byron Bay influencer's perfectly curated feed. (Or even Khaleesi, mother of dragons.)

Content

Dressed in coordinating mint green dresses, Lorde and her followers sway gracefully within the ethereal glow of her neutral-toned tent. Joining hands and leaning to the floor like a prayer circle of synchronized swimmers, Lorde sings to her group to begin their sun salutations and transcendental meditations. "You can burn sage, and I'll cleanse the crystals," she adds. Whether her wellness influencer shtick is authentic or not, there's one thing we know: the look sure does suit her.
